Porous Ceramic Ball
Porous ceramic balls, also called filtering balls, are inert ceramic spheres in which 20-30% porosity is formed during manufacture. They serve not only to support and cover catalyst beds but also to filter out particulate and colloidal impurities, including grain solids, gelatinous matter, asphaltic material, heavy metals, and iron ions smaller than 25um, which are retained within the open pore structure.

Porous ceramic balls, also called filtering balls, are produced by introducing 20-30% porosity into an otherwise inert ceramic ball. They therefore perform two functions: supporting and covering the catalyst bed, and filtering impurities from the feed, including suspended grain solids, gelatinous matter, asphaltic compounds, heavy metals, and iron ions smaller than 25um. When a layer of porous balls is placed at the top of a reactor, impurities that escaped removal in upstream processing are adsorbed inside the ball pores, protecting the catalyst below and prolonging the operating cycle of the unit. Because the impurities present in different feeds vary, users should select the product according to ball size, pore size, and porosity; where necessary, molybdenum, nickel, cobalt, or other active components can be added to the balls to guard the catalyst against coking or poisoning.
